- The Silent Ballet > Articles > Interview: God is an Astronaut
“Fresh off the release of Far From Refuge, Jordan Volz sits down to interview God is an Astronaut’s Torsten Kinsella.” - The Silent Ballet > Christian Fennesz/Ryuichi Sakamoto - Cendre
“In exercises of fragile minimalism, Christian Fennesz and Ryuichi Sakamoto are suitably versed. Both artists have built themselves reputations for delivering delicate compositions with the most negligible of instruments to aid them.” - The Silent Ballet > Lichens - Omns
“After a good old fashioned mind melting, ushered in by the wailing chorus, Lichens’ Omns drifts into subtle loops and delays, trickling piano and minimalistic guitar solos.” - joy wants eternity » Tour Blog
“We will be adding photos and keeping a tour log on here when the trip begins.”

Epic Instrumental Night on Now Like Photographs
Posted on | June 10, 2007 | No Comments
I mentioned them the other day, and so it’s appropriate to let you know that tonight, June 10th 2007 at 9pm CST, is the first installment in a live event that Now Like Photographs is calling “Epic Instrumental Night.” The music will be recorded live from St. Paul, MN and looks to feature the bands Empires, Dreamless, History, and Box Elder.
This is a good chance to listen to some bands and music you might not otherwise have heard of.

Prelude 2, Dustin O’Halloran
Posted on | June 9, 2007 | 6 Comments
After logging in to eMusic to grab some links to records for a couple posts, I noticed that there was a new Dustin O’Halloran piece available. It just so happens that I had exactly 2 downloads remaining for the month, so I snatched up the 2 track Prelude 2. The piece was used in a European Audi commercial. The first track is the full work and the second is the shorter edit used in the commercial. It’s nice stuff, and definitely worth a listen.
I thought for sure I had posted previously about O’Halloran’s Piano Solos, but I haven’t. It’s a great record of, obviously, piano music. I just realized that he’s also released a Piano Solos Vol. 2. It’s not currently available on eMusic, so I’m in the process of tracking down a non DRM’ed version.
Here’s the Audi commercial

Streaming Music & Podcasts
Posted on | June 8, 2007 | 1 Comment
I don’t tend to listen to streaming music all that often. The occasional serendipitous discovery of something worthwhile is almost always rendered irrelevant by the gigantic amount of new age or lounge or down-tempo or dub whatever else it may be masquerading as ambient music. Despite this, I have found a couple places to be a cut or two above the rest. In particular, the Now Like Photographs weekly podcast is a must listen.

“From a basement in Seattle, Washington, 15 strangers met together in response to an ad welcoming all instruments for experimenting with walls of noise.” - Grace Cathedral Park - Music at Last.fm
“Grace Cathedral Park keeps you floating in dreamland on a Sunday morning. Their songs are epic no matter what the length is, and in some cases the song can actually last for 20 minutes.”

Stars of the Lid (Brian McBride) Interview
Posted on | June 7, 2007 | No Comments
“Debating The Merits Of Stars Of The Lid”, interview from eMusic conducted by Robert Phoenix via IM.
“There are a lot of similarities, but I think it’s more than just our titles than separate us from new age composers. I’ve thought about this a lot. I know that much of the new age music that I’ve heard I find somewhat lifeless, instrumentally and compositionally. What makes music part of a genre is a question for critics to answer. Early on, we were tarnished with the “post-rock” label. We’d tour and almost every interview wanted to ask us about post-rock and how we felt being post-rock or American post-rock.”
