Ambient Music MySpace Blogs, In One Easy Place!

MySpace.com MySpace is a great resource for music fans to get news and interact with musicians and artists. Unfortunately, the interface and architecture of MySpace leaves a lot to be desired, to be polite. Specifically, it's particularly difficult to create one space where you can keep up to date on things you're interested in. It's also not very good at decoupling the content from its MySpace.com presentation, which makes a Web and information guy like myself fairly uncomfortable.

One way I'm attempting to combat this is by using the little bit of RSS that MySpace makes available. I've begun to aggregate all the feeds of MySpace blogs I'm interested in, with the hopes of staying up to date on news. I've created an OPML file, and while it's not particularly useful for readers at the moment, I'm making it available because, you know, why not? In the future I'm planning on creating a more valuable presentation layer for the content, one that stays up to date and gives you only what you need. For now, there's a raw OPML file, or you can browse the feeds listing at share.opml.org.

I'm experimenting with the last.fm playlist player widget. I'm not convinced this is useful at all, and the code to create it is a disaster, so maybe this is just something to put up over on the Ambient Music Blog MySpace profile and forget about.

In order to get the thing to have any value whatsoever, I had to choose tracks from my charts that offer full track plays, rather than 30 second previews. Unfortunately, for obvious rights issues reasons, not many of the tracks I listen to often are licensed for full streaming. Luckily, some of my favorite artists have a few tracks available for full streaming, including Loscil and Wes Willenbring.

Mutek Festival, Loscil Webcast

Mutek Festival I can't really suss out exactly when it will be, or how to listen, firstly because the Web sites are a bit obtuse, and secondly because my Francaise is un peu rough, but tomorrow at the Mutek Festival in Montreal Loscil is performing and there is an alleged webcast. Check out the links for more info, and if you can figure anything out, let me know!

Latest eMusic Albums List

I'm not sure where the data is coming from, as I don't think eMusic has an API, but this morning I came across a listing of all albums recently added to eMusic. eMusic is notoriously bad at cataloging records, especially anything close to what you'd consider ambient, so sorting by genre isn't particularly useful. But you can sort by "Label" and "Artist", and while I don't know that I'd use this thing too terribly often for finding new tracks, it's a nice thing to have.

Speaking of finding stuff on eMusic, boy are there so many things they could do to improve the way the site works. If anyone from is eMusic reading this, maybe you'd like to have an ambient-music-listening, MLS-having, information & user experience professional on hand?

Ambient Music & Post-Rock Photos

I'm a big fan of photo sharing site Flickr, and one good way to learn more about the music I listen to has been to look for photos of artists I'm familiar with. I recently took a look at my 4 Star+ playlist in iTunes and tried to see how many photos I could come up with. The results are below. See how many PowerBooks you can spot!
